Tellurian Research Press
About us
Tellurian Research PressTellurian Research Press (TRP) is a Melbourne-based, independent publisher founded in 2015 by self-taught artists, Sylvia Convey and Tony Convey. Showcasing the Convey's art practice, TRP's list is ostensibly dedicated to documenting and exploring the historical and contemporary significance of Australian and international self-taught artists' work. TRP also publishes handmade and culturally significant books.
In 2015, TRP was born with the publication of Double Vision: A Shared Journey, a beautiful monograph featuring an introduction by Professor Colin Rhodes, international academic, artist, and author of the influential Outsider Art: Spontaneous Alternatives. Launched at Orange Regional Gallery, the release of the book coincided with an exhibition of the Conveys' work. Please click here to browse our catalogue. Sylvia and Tony ConveyFor more than 45 years Australian artists, Sylvia Convey and Tony Convey have created a unique body of art in diverse media. Their work has been exhibited throughout Australia and in Belgium, France, Germany, Japan and the United States. TRP was established in part to document this work in high quality publications including printed books, hand-made books and ebooks.
The first publication was the lavishly illustrated hard cover book Double Vision: A Shared Journey with an introduction by Professor Colin Rhodes author of the influential Outsider Art: Spontaneous Alternatives. TRP's second monograph, Spirit Lines was released in 2017, and we're currently planning our TRP SHORTS series, which will be released in 2019. Sylvia is also creating various handmade, limited edition art books - several of which are now available for purchase. Image: Tony and Sylvia Convey * * * |
Self-taught artistsThe term Outsider Art was coined by art critic Roger Cardinal in 1972 as an English synonym for art brut... (French: "raw art" or "rough art"), a label created by French artist Jean Dubuffet to describe art created outside the boundaries of official culture; Dubuffet focused particularly on art by those on the outside of the established art scene, such as psychiatric hospital patients and children... While Dubuffet's term is quite specific, the English term "outsider art" is often applied more broadly, to include certain self-taught or naive art makers who were never institutionalised. Typically, those labeled as outsider artists have little or no contact with the mainstream art world or art institutions. In many cases, their work is discovered only after their deaths. Often, outsider art illustrates extreme mental states, unconventional ideas, or elaborate fantasy worlds. Image: Jean Dubuffet (Gamma-Liason) * * * |
